Two limited edition Return of the King Definitive First Day Covers (FDCs) were issued to coincide with the worldwide release of Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King’ motion picture which later went on to garner numerous major awards and accolades. Filmed entirely in the North and South Islands of New Zealand, these magnificent Return of the King FDCs which are much in demand by collectors, pay tribute to ‘The Lord of The Rings’ trilogy and explore J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic Middle-Earth saga in a manner that movie enthusiasts, stamp lovers, and fans will enjoy and appreciate.

Both envelopes feature different designs and the set comes in a clear, archival quality protective sleeve, and includes a full-colour ‘Return of the King’ brochure containing background information on both this Nov. 5, 2003 stamp release and the epic production it honours. NEW ZEALAND POST'S 2003 ‘The Return of the King’ philatelic issue is the only stamp release officially licensed by New Line Cinema and approved by the film’s director, Peter Jackson, and was released with their total cooperation and blessing. Designed by Frans Lenzen - now out of print (OOP), these limited edition Return of the King First Day Covers represent a wonderful opportunity to commemorate this huge cinematic undertaking. Two earlier, now OOP sets were released to commemorate ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movie trilogy: ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ set was issued in December 2001, and a second ‘The Two Towers’ set was issued in December 2002.

First day cover with six self adhesive stamps and November 5, 2003 cancellation postmarks

Dangers of Mordor First Day Cover with Definitive set of self-adhesive 2003 Return of the King stamps postmarked on the first day of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ stamp issue. Envelope features ominous view of Mordor with distant Mount Doom glowing menacingly. Designed primarily for postal vending machines, self-adhesives are smaller (26 x 37 mm; 1 x 1 1/2") than the corresponding gummed stamps (25 x 50 mm; 1 x 2"), and are framed in a different aspect ratio.

First day cover with six gummed stamps and November 5, 2003 cancellation postmarks

Warriors of Gondor First Day Cover featuring a complete set (40c, 80c, 90c, $1.30, $1.50, and $2.00) of gummed 2003 Return of the King stamps postmarked on the first day of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ stamp issue. Envelope depicts Knights of Gondor preparing to charge at the Battle of Pelennor Fields, Minas Tirith. This FDC envelope is also included in the deluxe Presentation Pack folio.

First Day Covers: Pictorial envelopes which are issued and stamped with a specifically-designed Return of the King cancellation postmark that is only used for that day and issue. The cancellation stamp for this First Day Cover is a stylized Crown encircled by the words ‘The Return of the King, First Day of Issue, 5 November 2003, Stamps Centre Wanganui New Zealand’. First Day Covers are very collectable since they are hard to obtain after issuance. This issue was only released in New Zealand and sold out quickly.
