WE WILL ALSO be offering occasional ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ First Day Cover Miniature Sheets, Stamp Booklet and Presentation Packs - either purchase direct or check our regular auctions. Two earlier, now OOP sets of Maximum Cards were released to commemorate ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movie trilogy: ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ set was issued in December 2001, and a second ‘The Two Towers’ set was issued in December 2002.

Postcard: Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli, Aragorn, and Gandalf are all that remain of the original Fellowship, Stamp design: Legolas fights defiantly from his trusty horse Arod.

Postcard: Frodo (Elijah Woods) and loyal companion Sam are guided deep into Mordor by an untrustworthy Gollum. Can Frodo throw the One Ring into the fiery depths of Mount Doom and live to tell the tale? Stamp design: Misled by Gollum, Frodo Baggins uses the Phial of Galadriel in Shelob’s Lair.

Postcard: Meriadoc 'Merry' Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan) distinguished himself in the Battle of Pelennor Fields fighting under King Théoden, Stamp design: Young halflings Merry and Pippin Took (Billy Boyd) stand shoulder to shoulder in a flooded Isengard, having defeat Saruman.

Postcard: Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) accepts Anduril, the reforged sword of the King from Elrond. Crowned Elessar he seeks neither glory nor power, simply the love of Elrond’s daughter Arwen Undómiel, Stamp design: King Elessar leading the Army of the Dead at Pelennor Fields.

Postcard: Gandalf the White (Ian McKellen) must divert attention away from Frodo and the Ring, Stamp design: Gandalf battles the forces of Sauron.

Postcard: Gollum (Andy Serkis) wants desperately to be reunited with "my precious," now in the hands of a 'nasty' Hobbit, Stamp design: Once a fisherman, Sméagol still has a fondness for fish, despite being addicted to the powerful One Ring.
Maximum Cards: Picture postcards which have an illustration relating to the stamp affixed, and a postmark on the pictorial side of the card. The three elements - postcard illustration, stamp and postmark must relate but not be identical. These post cards and stamps have been postmarked with a specifically-designed cancellation that was only used for that day and issue. The cancellation stamp is a stylized Crown encircled by the words ‘The Return of the King, First Day of Issue, 5 November 2003, Stamps Centre Wanganui New Zealand’. First Day issues are very collectable since they are limited in nature and hard to obtain after issuance. This issue was only released in New Zealand to commemorate Peter Jackson’s ‘The Return of the King’ and sold out quicker than anticipated.
