NEW ZEALAND POST'S 5th November 2003 ‘The Return of the King’ philatelic issue is one of the only three stamp releases officially licensed by New Line Cinema and approved by the film’s director, Peter Jackson, and was released with their total cooperation and blessing. Designed by Frans Lenzen, these now out of print (OOP) limited edition Return of the King Miniature Sheets represent a wonderful opportunity to commemorate this huge cinematic achievement. Two earlier, now OOP sets were released to commemorate ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movie trilogy: ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ set was issued in December 2001, and a second ‘The Two Towers’ set was issued in December 2002.
Left: Legolas Greenleaf 'Prince Of Mirkwood' (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli, son of Glóin (John Rhys-Davies) fighting from horseback on trusty Arod. They, along with Aragorn and Gandalf, are seemingly all that remain of the original Fellowship of the Ring.
Right: Frodo Baggins (Elijah Woods) surrounded by spidery webs, holds aloft the Phial of Galadriel to light the way in the tunnels under Cirith Ungol. The young Ringbearer feels the weight of Middle-earth on his tiny shoulders as Sam and he journey into the land of darkness. To destroy Sauron, the One Ring must be cast into the fiery depths of Mount Doom, located deep within Mordor.
Left: Amidst a flooded Isengard the two hobbits Merry - Meriadoc Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin - Peregrin Took (Billy Boyd), both faraway from their beloved Shire must remain stout a heart and true to the task at hand. The coming War of the Ring closely binds their fate together, although leading them down separate paths.
Right: King Elessar (Viggo Mortensen) successor to Arathorn, and the One who may yet unite the free races against the forces of Sauron. Riding into battle before the Armies of the West, he wields Andúril sword of Kings, and wears the emblem of the White Tree. A former ranger, Strider seeks neither glory nor power, simply the love of immortal Elven princess Arwen Undómiel.
Left: Gandalf the White (Sir Ian McKellen) seeks to force a great confrontation in the War of the Ring. Shown sword fighting with Glamdring this Istari wizard warrior seeks to distract Sauron’s attention so that Frodo and Sam may avoid capture and complete their dangerous task.
Right: Body and soul twisted and ravaged by aeons of slavery to the One Ring, Gollum/Sméagol (Andy Serkis) seeks to be reunited with "my preciousss" - the One Ring - stolen from him by Frodo’s uncle Bilbo Baggins many years earlier. Once a fisherman, Sméagol still has a fondness for tasty fish (or crunchy Hobbits).
Miniature Sheets: These are stamps displayed in an attached illustrated panel. The Miniature Sheets portray the origin of each stamp image, which are derived from key scenes and moments in ‘The Lord of The Rings: Return of the King’ motion picture.
Additional Info: Miniature Sheets are unhinged mint (UHM). Two earlier, now OOP sets were released to commemorate the ‘Middle earth’ movie trilogy: ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ set was issued in December 2001, and a second ‘The Two Towers’ set was issued in December 2002.
