Miniature Sheets: Return of the King

actual size: 110 H x 65 W mm; 4 1/3 x 2 1/4 inches

40 cent stamp: Legolas lets and arrow fly

Left: Legolas Greenleaf 'Prince Of Mirkwood' (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli, son of Glóin (John Rhys-Davies) fighting from horseback on trusty Arod. They along with Aragorn and Gandalf are seemingly all that remain of the original Fellowship of the Ring.

80 cent stamp: Frodo Baggins thief in the dark

Right: Frodo Baggins (Elijah Woods) holds aloft the Phial of Galadriel to light his way in Torech Ungol (Shelob’s Lair). The Ringbearer feels the weight of Middle-earth on his tiny shoulders as he and Sam journey into the heart of darkness. Frodo must cast the One Ring into the fiery depths of Mount Doom, located deep within Mordor while avoiding Sauron’s minions.

90 cent stamp: Merry and Pippin at Isengard after the flood

Left: Amidst a flooded Isengard the two hobbits Merry - Meriadoc Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin - Peregrin Took (Billy Boyd) must remain stout a heart and true to the task at hand. The coming War of the Ring ties their fate closer together.

1.30 dollar stamp: Aragorn Warrior King and heir to the throne

Right: King Elessar, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) son of Arathorn, and the one who may yet unite the free races against the forces of evil - Sauron. A former ranger, Strider seeks neither glory nor power, simply the love of immortal Elven princess Arwen Undómiel.

1.50 dollar stamp: Gandalf fighting wizard

Left: Gandalf the White (Sir Ian McKellen) seeks to force a great confrontation in the War of the Ring. The wizard warrior hopes to attract the full force of Sauron’s gathering armies and attention, so that Frodo and Sam may cunningly complete their dangerous task to destroy the One Ring in Mount Doom.

2.00 dollar stamp: Gollum likes tasty Hobbits

Right: Body and soul twisted and ravaged by aeons of slavery to the One Ring, Gollum/Sméagol (Andy Serkis) seeks to be reunited with “my precious” - the One Ring - stolen from him by Frodo’s uncle Bilbo Baggins many years earlier. Once a fisherman, Sméagol still has a fondness for tasty fish.

Miniature Sheets: Regular perforated stamps set in an attached illustrated panel showing the origin of the stamp, each of which are derived from key scenes in ‘Return of the King’ motion picture.

First Day Covers: Pictorial envelopes which are issued and stamped with a specifically-designed cancellation postmark that is only used for that day and issue. The cancellation stamp for this First Day Cover is a stylized Crown encircled by the words ‘The Return of the King, First Day of Issue, 5 November 2003, Stamps Centre Wanganui New Zealand’. First Day Covers are very collectable since they are hard to obtain after issuance. This issue was only released in New Zealand and sold out quickly.

Additional Info: Loose gummed and self-adhesive stamps are unhinged mint (UHM), and First Day Covers (FDC) are unaddressed. Technical details are available. Two earlier, now OOP Presentation Packs were released to commemorate the ‘Middle earth’ movie trilogy: ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ Presentation Pack was issued in December 2001, and a second ‘The Two Towers’ Presentation Pack was issued in December 2002.
