TOLKIEN'S THE HOBBIT of The Lord of the Ring trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, better recognized as Die Gefährten, La Communaute de L'Anneau, La Comunidad del Anillo, La Compagnia Dell'Anello, and De Reisgenootschap internationally, has been translated to the screen by the husband-wife script writing team of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, working alongside long-time collaborator Philippa Boyens. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2014).
MARKING THE SUCCESS of that enormous seven year movie production, New Zealand Post issued a special Fellowship of the Ring thematic range of gummed and self-adhesive stamps, several different first day covers (including special miniature sheets), postcards, miniature sheets, stamp booklets, and presentation packs on 4 December 2001. Aimed primarily at stamp collectors, these Fellowship of the Ring stamps were produced in limited numbers, and not surprisingly many popular items were sold out at most NZ post offices within days of their release. Since New Zealand Post couldn’t anticipate how successful Peter Jackson’s first The Lord of the Ring movie would be, the print run for these Fellowship of the Ring stamps was small relative to the subsequent print runs for The Two Towers and The Return of the King stamp issues. This makes The Fellowship of the Rings stamps particularly collectable.
FORTUNATELY WE STOCK a full Fellowship range from individual stamps to complete packages such as the Full Set and Ultimate Collections containing one of every item produced. We can supply popular items including hard-to-find ones like the stamp sheets. Contact us for purchasing details or check our regular auctions on such popular venues as eBay. Additional official stamp issues featuring key characters and scenes were released to coincide with The Two Towers, and a final issue was released on 5 November 2003 to commemorate the world premiere in Wellington of The Return of the King.
DESIGNED AT WETA Workshop in Wellington by Sacha Lees, these stamp sets include a full-colour brochure containing extensive background information on these exciting stamp releases and the epic movies they honour. The New Zealand Post 2001 philatelic release of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ was the only stamp issue endorsed by the film’s director, Peter Jackson and officially licensed by New Line Productions. Filmed entirely in the North and South Islands of New Zealand (see Ian Brodie’s Location Guide book for details), Jackson’s trilogy later went on to garner numerous major international film awards and accolades.
