THE CONCLUSION OF JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Ring trilogy, ‘The Return of the King’ - internationally known to audiences and fans as El Retorno del Rey, Le Retour du Roi, Die Rückkehr des Königs, and Il Ritorno Del Re - marks Peter Jackson final LotR movie and had its world premier in his home town of Wellington, New Zealand.

MARKING THE SUCCESS of that almost decade long movie production, New Zealand’s Postal Authority issued a commemorative Return of the King thematic stamps range of gummed and self-adhesive stamps, several different first day covers (including special miniature sheets), postcards, miniature sheets, stamp booklets, and presentation packs on 5 November 2003. Marketed primarily for philatelic and stamp collectors, they were produced in limited numbers, and not surprisingly many popular items were sold out at larger NZ post offices within days of release.

DESIGNED BY FRANS LENZEN using original images from photographer Pierre Vinet, these Return of the King stamp sets include a full-colour brochure containing extensive background information on these exciting stamp releases and epic movies they commemorate. The New Zealand Post 2003 philatelic release of ‘The Return of the King’ was one of only three stamp issue endorsed by the film’s director, Peter Jackson and officially licensed by New Line Productions. Filmed entirely in the North and South Islands of New Zealand (see Ian Brodie’s Location Guide book for details), Jackson’s trilogy later went on to garner numerous major international film awards and accolades.
